Acting for the Portuguese Government, we offer credit and bond insurance on investments overseas, providing cover against political and monetary risks and natural disasters.

We operate under the direct supervision of the Insurance Institute of Portugal (Instituto de Seguros de Portugal), a public body responsible for overseeing the activities of insurance companies based in Portugal.

COSEC is well placed to draw on the industry’s know-how in developing credit insurance and bond products because of its relationships with its shareholders, BPI and Euler Hermes, and involvement with international industry associations.

Our Expertise

In addition to the provision of commercial risk cover in domestic and international markets, COSEC, for and on behalf of the Portuguese Government, offers political and exceptional risk cover in political risk countries, including cover for:

  • Acts of Parliament, government or public body decisions that affect the country of the importer
  • Expropriation, nationalization, confiscation and other measures of comparable effect
  • Bank transfer problems, currency conversion or a general moratorium
  • Outbreak of war (even if not formally declared), revolutions, uprisings and mutiny, annexation and other comparable situations
  • Natural disasters, including earthquakes, tidal waves, volcanic eruptions, typhoons, cyclones and floods

    HISTORY

    COSEC was set up on 29 December 1969. Our shareholders include a major Portuguese financial group and the world’s leading credit insurance group.
