The Export Credits Guarantee Department (ECGD) is the United Kingdom's official Export Credit Agency. ECGD works closely with exporters, project sponsors, banks and buyers to help U.K. exporters of capital equipment and project-related goods and services to win business and invest overseas by providing guarantees, insurance and reinsurance against loss. Our ExpertiseExport Insurance Policy: This product protects exporters against not receiving payments to which they are contractually entitled under a capital goods contract as a result of the occurrence of specified commercial or political risks.Bond Insurance Policy: This policy provides protection in the event of a bond being called unfairly and for calls made as a result of specified political events, and is provided in respect of an export contract where a Buyer Credit facility, a SCF facility, or an Export Insurance Policyis being provided for that contract. Overseas Investment Insurance: ECGD’s Overseas Investment Insurance (OII) scheme provides insurance for U.K. investors against the main political risks of expropriation, war, restrictions on remittances and breach of government undertakings. All companies and persons carrying on business in the United Kingdom are in principle eligible for insurance, provided that the investment is identifiable as of U.K. origin in the host country. This also applies if the investment is made via an overseas subsidiary. Cover can be considered in respect of any new investment. Cover may be available for the purchase of existing shares in an overseas enterprise if the surrounding circumstances are such that it can be said that the U.K. investor purchasing those shares is making an investment of resources in an enterprise carried on outside the United Kingdom. In general, insurance is not normally available for an investor’s existing investment in an enterprise, but it can be considered where a direct investor is simultaneously putting new resources (not retained earnings) into the enterprise in the form of equity.
