Infrastructure in Africa
Better infrastructure not only improves the quality of life for Africa's citizens but also improves competitiveness and business environments of African countries. A recent issue of Perspectives discusses growth and investment trends in Africa, highlighting MIGA's experience in telecommunications. Infrastructure investors can access potential project opportunities directly on MIGA's FDI.net. MIGA supports the private sector by offering political risk insurance to protect investments and by providing quality information that help inform investment decisions. |

Public private partnerships (PPPs) can play an important role in bringing greater private participation in infrastructure. According to an article by the Public-Private Infrastructure Advisory Facility (PPIAF), success partnerships will require fiscal reform, improvements in public sector management and importantly, careful attention to project design and risk allocation. To help fill the knowledge gap in this area, the World Bank Institute supports public sector institutions through its network of PPPs and learning tools such as its publication on Granting and Renegotiating Infrastructure Contracts. Also of interest, a Senegalese case study by the Institute of Public Private Partnerships (IP3) highlights the importance of the legal and regulatory setting for PPPs.
